John Daly’s Return Comes With a Fashion Statement

Phil Mickelson will not be the only one making his return to the PGA Tour at this week’s St. Jude Classic. John Daly is in the field, and don’t reach for the remote when his visage pops the pixels on your television. Not only has Daly dropped 50 pounds, but he has also been wearing dazzling golf pants in bright oranges, yellows and jagged patterns this season on the European tour.

The pants are produced by Loudmouth Golf (loudmouthgolf.com), whose founder, Scott Woodworth, said he went to his closet one day to dress for golf and was frustrated when all he found were khakis. Remembering the style of Johnny Miller and others growing up, Woodworth, a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, started designing and making his own pants. There are now 25 styles with names like Shagadelic, Disco Balls and A-Tisket A-Tasket-A. These are not blue-collar golf duds, though: most styles retail for $89.95.

Maybe it’s not such an unusual marriage, Daly and an unrestrained wardrobe. It should be fun to see how this one plays out.

Perhaps the St. Jude folks will have the sense of humor to pair Daly with Mickelson.

Daly to Phil on the first tee: “I think you have the honor, Phil.”

Mickelson to Daly: “I’m sorry, I couldn’t hear you. Your pants are too loud.”
